Rideout Family History

Jacob - 4th Generation

Jacob Rideout was born on Jan 12, 1772, at Brunswick, ME.

He married on July 7, 1802 in Pembroke, Washington Co. ME, to Eunice Leach (she was born abt 1776 at Brunswick, ME). Jacob was a successful farmer at Bowdoinham, ME.

He served in 1814 in Capt. Patten's Co., in Col. Mitchell's Regiment in Augusta. 
During the war of 1812, in the records at Topsham, ME, it is recorded: there was no truer-hearted soldier than Jacob Rideout"...

The children of Jacob and Eunice Rideout were:

  4. Thaxter (born Sept 15, 1808 at Pembroke, ME);

  7. Sophronia (born Sept 3, 1817 at Topsham, ME, died May 4, 1853);
  8. Prudence;
  9. Irene (born Jan 22, 1821 at Brunswick, ME);
  10. Thomas T (born May 27, 1822 at Brunswick, ME) (see below)
THOMAS T: He was a 1st Sgt., Co. F of the 19th ME Volunteers. It is widely known that the Grandy Army Post of Bowdoinham, ME was named for the brave soldier, Thomas Tyler Rideout. He was only a little past 20 years of age when he enlisted, but was appointed sergeant of Company F quickly thereafter. Capt. Silas Adams well says in his book "The History of Bowdoinham", "He was with his company continually until he was mortally wounded in the shoulder on the 3rd of July, 1863, in Pickett's Famous charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. No nobler man went from this town, and no nobler man died for her honor". There is a monument in the honor of the soldiers of the Civil War in Bowdoinham, ME. He was wounded on July 3, 1863, and died on July 19, 1863 of the bullet wound to his shoulder.

HOUGHTON: He died on May 5, 1881, aged 74 years, 6 months. He married to a Margaret, and had at least two children: Edwin, died on Aug 16, 1849, ae 7 mos; and George D, who died on Sept 29, 1839, ae 7 mos. Margaret died on June 5, 1902, aged 95 years, 8 mos. The family (Houghton, Margaret, Edwin and George D) are buried at Maquoit Cemetery in Brunswick, ME.
